Abbey Rangers made the long journey to Johnstownbridge this evening for their U16 league clash against table-toppers Balyna.
Balyna opened the scoring with an early point, but Abbey Rangers responded brightly, with Tomas Dunne finishing a well-worked move to the net. Balyna hit back with a goal of their own and began to take control as the half progressed. They added a penalty goal and continued to dominate, leaving the half-time score at 2-7 to 1-4 in favour of the home side.
Abbey Rangers came out strongly after the break, with Tomas Dunne leading the charge by striking two superb two-pointers to narrow the gap. Dan Delaney was unlucky not to find the net, rattling the crossbar during a promising attack.
Rangers battled hard throughout the second half and were unfortunate not to convert a penalty. They managed to reduce the deficit to just three points entering the final ten minutes. However, Balyna’s quick and accurate passing proved decisive, as they struck for two late goals & two points to seal the win.
It was an entertaining contest, with strong performances across the pitch. Cormac Stafford made excellent saves in goal, while James Conroy, Oran Power, and Scott Kavanagh stood firm in defence. Evan Brett impressed in midfield, while Tomas Dunne and Dan Delaney were standout performers in attack
