The GAA Injury Benefit Fund (sometimes incorrectly called “player insurance”) is not an insurance policy. It is a self-funded GAA support fund designed to help players with medical costs where no other cover exists, or where there are shortfalls or excesses on private health insurance.
The fund does not automatically cover all medical expenses, and there is no obligation on clubs to pay medical bills. Its purpose is to assist players where needed, not to replace private health insurance.
How claims work
All injury claims must be registered by the player or parent/guardian through Foireann. The club’s role is to approve the claim in line with fund guidelines.
Under the updated process:
- The player or parent/guardian controls the claim and remains responsible for it.
- When a claim is approved for payment, the player or parent/guardian can choose:
- to have the payment made directly to themselves, or
- to have the payment made directly to the club (for example, where the club has already paid medical costs).
- to have the payment made directly to themselves, or
For GDPR reasons, clubs cannot instruct payments on behalf of players — the choice must come from the player or parent/guardian.
Important reminder on membership
Players are only eligible for the Injury Benefit Fund once club membership is fully paid and active. Unpaid membership means the player is not covered by the fund 2026. Membership is now open with rates unchanged from 2025 Click Here For Membership.
