Kildangan NS set out against Ballymore Eustace in today’s u13 girls Cumann na mBunscol final.
Having won the toss, Ballymore elected to play down the hill with a strong breeze on their backs, giving them an instant advantage. Ballymore lined out with a strong and physical team. Despite these factors, Kildangan had a strong hold on the game not long before half time. A Ballymore goal however saw them gain some breathing space.
A well taken point by Katelynn Douglas set Kildangan on their way in the second half and the Kildangan girls seemed to grow in confidence as the game progressed. Kildangan definitely hit their purple patch at the right time and managed to get the game level in the last breath.
Extra time would ensue.
The score of the match came in the first half of extra time by Roisin Gleeson from a long range free. Nora Mahon and Roisin Gleeson’s incredible work rate payed off and saw Kildangan take a two points lead, helped along by Allanah Clare and Niamh Gleason off the bench in the forwards. Along with the other substitutes playing a big role, goalkeeper Lillian Rose Cummins was flawless and was equivalent to having an extra defender on the field. Maisy Broughall and Orlaith Cunningham bossed the backs with Orlaith Cunningham blocking a shot on the line late in the 2nd half. The moment of the match was when Niamh Williams intercepted an almost certain goal chance in the dying seconds of extra time, a shot that would have seen Ballymore go ahead by one. A massive save which saw Kildangan clinch the title for a second consecutive year.
